Build, Body, and Bone Series
Artist Statement
In my Build, Body, and Bone series I explore the theme of continuance. This series is a collection of sculptural ceramic vessels that I hand-build with porcelain or white stoneware. These sculptures examine and present a visual depiction of loss, scarring, and rebuilding via negative space, and altered forms. Build, Body, and Bone is informed by the study of bones—their structural support and protection of the body as well as their remaining physical remnants which are the last to decay. The sculptures are glazed with contrasting textures to provide a physical blueprint for process, vulnerability, reconstruction, regeneration, and growth. Each vessel is marked to highlight moments of disruption, and to exhibit how the negative can only exist upon the positive, seeking what it means to be whole. With this body of work, I explore what we’ve voluntarily removed or involuntarily lost, as we stretch and push ourselves to grow. In the creation of change and modified space comes strength as we nurture our wholeness and entirety. Each vessel is an embodiment of restructuring, shaping, and building on and around loss as a means of nurturing wholeness and rendering strength.
